Volunteer At Work: Volunteer Lesa Beamer drags cut honeysuckle to a pile, where it will be removed from the property. Stumps are treated with herbicide to prevent resprouting.

The Victors: Volunteers at a joint Greenbelt - Wild Ones workday in the Hinkson Valley Nature Preserve stand before a pile of cut honeysuckle.

The Enemy: Bush honeysuckle is an invasive exotic shrub that forms a solid understory in places, especially along forest edges and under open forest canopies. It leafs out very early in the spring, and consequently shades out the native Missouri forest wildflowers. The Greenbelt Land Trust relies on volunteers to help eradicate this and other invasive exotic species on Greenbelt Nature Preserves.

Progress: The area at right has been cleared of bush honeysuckle by volunteers. However, more remains on the left.
The Greenbelt Land Trust has no paid staff, and relies exclusively on volunteers for a variety of activities. You can get involved in various ways.

Workdays in the Greenbelt Nature Preserves: The Greenbelt Land Trust periodically holds work days in both the Hinkson and Spring Valley Nature Preserves. Typically the work days are in the spring or fall, on a weekend morning, and last for about 2 hours. Our immediate needs are the eradication of invasive exotic plants, notably bush honeysuckle, as well as wintercreeper in Spring Valley. Trash pickup is, unfortunately, an ongoing activity. Future activities may include forest thinning in selected locations, control burns, seeding or planting native grasses, forbs and trees, and posting property boundaries.

Webmaster: We need a webmaster to keep this web site up-to-date and looking good.

Preserve and Easement Monitors: For those willing to make a commitment, we need individuals who can monitor Greenbelt Preserves and Easements over time, on a regular basis.

Membership Development: We need to keep the Greenbelt membership growing if we are to be an effective force in preserving open land in central Missouri. If you like to meet people and "spread the word," we could use your help.

Fundraising: Land Trust activity isn't cheap even if all lands and easements are donated. We would also like to be in a position to purchase lands and easements. If you like fundraising and/or have experience with it, please consider helping us.

Watch for specific work day schedules posted on the News link. Call or email the office if you would like to discuss volunteering, or if you are not currently on our email list.
