The Greenbelt Land Trust owns a 75-acre tract along Hinkson Creek (Rock Quarry Road) and a 2-acre tract along County House Branch (Spring Valley Road) in Columbia. These properties contain some non-native, invasive plants such as Japanese Honeysuckle, Sericea Lespedeza and Euonymous. The Greenbelt Land Trust conducts workdays in the spring and the fall to remove these non-natives to encourage native plants to thrive.
Non-native plant eradication entails uprooting plants or cutting them and applying herbicides to kill them. Volunteers should dress for outdoor work and be prepared for the weather.
The Greenbelt Land Trust will provide work gloves and tools, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. Useful tools include loppers, pruners and saws.

Get Involved
Land Trusts are rich with opportunities for volunteer involvement, especially one with no paid staff like the Greenbelt Land Trust. If you enjoy dirty, backbreaking labor on rough terrain amongst ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes, we have several work days coming up on both the Hinkson and Spring Valley properties. Ian Thomas has graciously volunteered to do a basic revamp of our web site, but there are opportunities here for web site development, especially if you have a knack for graphic design. We will be initiating membership development and fundraising efforts this year, and we need help. We're always looking for good Board candidates, if you'd like to help steer the ship. If nothing else, we need your membership dues, and additional contributions for easement and land purchase. Call or email the office. Let us know who you are, what you're interested in, and what you're willing to do.
